1.  Who is Sola Scriptura Ministries International?

Sola Scriptura Ministries is a Canadian ministry whose mandate is to assist local congregations primarily throughout Canada to bring believers into maturity through sound biblical exposition and theological truth.

2.  What is your mission and purpose?

Our mission and purpose is to confront as many people as possible with the holiness of God. In Isaiah chapter 6, the prophet himself had a unique confrontation with God when he saw the Lord high and lifted up. Scripture has other examples of individuals who, when confronted with the awesome majesty of a Holy Sovereign God, became instantly aware of their own sinfulness and God’s utter holiness. It is only at this point that a sinful creature starts to become suitable for Christian service. Confronting one’s sinfulness in light of God’s holiness has the power to begin a transformation and clarification of one’s priorities in life. The worries, cares and concerns of this lifetime evaporate when one begins to see from the perspective of eternity. Faith in Jesus Christ is no mere intellectual exercise. It is the heart throb of the Church since He is the Head of the Church. Christians are to exercise their faith in Jesus through loving and obedient service. Our heart’s desire is that a new wave of reformation befall the Church in Canada as we embrace God’s decrees as outlined in Scripture.

3.  Could you explain the significance of the name Sola Scriptura?

The name Sola Scriptura is Latin and means Scripture Alone. Sola Scriptura was one of the five rallying cries of the Protestant Reformation. The other four being Sola Fidei (Faith Alone), Sola Gratia (Grace Alone), Solus Christus (Christ Alone) and Soli Deo Gloria (To God Alone be the Glory). Of the five Solas, Sola Scriptura best encapsulates the heart throb of the European Reformers. A key question posed by Martin Luther was, what is the final and ultimate authority for life, faith and worship? Has God given a sufficient and final decree through which all activities of human existence are to conform? Or does the Church along with tradition have the right and authority to impose binding legislation upon the hearts and minds of people, even when such legislation clearly violates Scripture? We hold that the Bible and the Bible alone is the only ultimate and reliable source of God’s personal revelation to mankind. While creeds and tradition serve to explain, summarize and demonstrate the central core of the Bible, they are only secondary authorities, subservient to the ultimate authority found in Scripture Alone.

4.Why did you choose the name Sola Scriptura?

In Canada there is a general air of dissatisfaction with the current state of Canadian Protestantism. Postmodern thought, religious pluralism, pop psychology and rank unbelief have made major inroads into many conservative churches. Increasingly, historic Christian doctrine is being replaced or undermined by pandering to perceived material needs. We do not wish to diminish the fact that sorrow and suffering are realities in human experience. As blood bought children of God we carry an obligation to love our neighbor as taught by our Lord. However, if all we do is address felt needs without a corresponding call to God’s holiness, then we have betrayed our trust in the God who has the power to save the human soul to the uttermost. Sola Scriptura was chosen because of its immediate familiarity with those within the Reformed community. Those of us who have grown up with biblical principles arising out of the Protestant Reformation will automatically grasp its doctrinal significance. It is our hope and desire that the name Sola Scriptura will cause those outside the Reformed wing of the Church to call into question any doctrine or practice that does not coincide with the revealed truth contained in Scripture. We would dearly like to be part of the process that brings all Christians to a greater depth of love, awe and wonder of our gracious heavenly Father.

5.  How will Sola Scriptura fulfill its mandate?

We seek to fulfill our mandate in two ways. First, by sponsoring regional conferences throughout Canada. This has always been and will continue to be our major means of trumpeting Biblical Truth. The conference themes normally deal with some attribute of God and how that attribute impacts the way we live. Second, Sola Scriptura has a publishing arm, Joshua Press, that publishes Reformed literature in the areas of spirituality, church history and theology and thus seeks to fulfill its mandate via the written word. Third, Sola Scriptura maintains an extensive resource base of books, audio tapes, DVDs, CDs, VHS and software that reflect the very best of historic Christian thought both past and present. Our resources include the voluminous collection from Ligonier Ministries as well Presbyterian & Reformed Publishing, Banner of Truth, Soli Deo Gloria, Canon Press, Joshua Press, Christian Focus, Day One and Shepherd Press. Featured authors include R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, James Montgomery Boice, John Piper, Michael Horton, John Bunyan, John Owen, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Richard Baxter, Thomas Watson etc.
